Goiter, goiter treatment, goiter surgery
Goiter is a condition where enlargement of the thyroid gland causes swelling in the neck. It is a form of hyperplasia of the thyroid gland, and occurs more often among females. In Hong Kong, patients usually suffer from this condition due to problems with their immune systems. The thyroid glands are located under both sides of the neck, with the main function of secreting thyroid hormones to regulate metabolism. However, when thyroid tissues increase excessively, pressure may be placed on the trachea which causes difficulty in breathing. This condition may also affect the patient’s appearance and may create a risk of cancer. Patients can undergo minimally invasive thyroidectomy to remove the growth tissues without leaving any scars.
